An emergency contraceptive for those
unexpected times
Next Choice® is a safe, effective emergency birth control option. It can help you prevent an unplanned pregnancy:
- if a birth control method fails (such as when a
condom breaks or slips) - if you don't take your birth control pills as directed
- if you are sexually attacked
Emergency contraceptives should only be used when a backup option is needed. It is not to be used routinely. It is important to remember that Next Choice is not the abortion pill (RU-486). It is not effective in terminating an existing pregnancy, when taken as directed. To find out more about emergency contraception, please click here.
Proven effective and safe
Next Choice is a generic product that is pharmaceutically equivalent (bioequivalent) to the two tablet Plan B® product. It is FDA approved. As with many birth control pills, it contains levonorgestrel. It differs from birth control pills in that it contains a larger dose of levonorgestrel and does not contain estrogen (it contains progestin). The sooner, the more effective
After unprotected sex, you only have a short “72-hour” window to help prevent a possible pregnancy. Next Choice works best the sooner you get started. If the first tablet is taken 72 hours (3 days) after sex, your chance of becoming pregnant drops when it is used as directed. In fact, one study showed that 7 out of 8 women who could have become pregnant did not get pregnant. It can even work better when it is taken within the first 24 hours.1,2
Because these “unexpected times” may occur when access to an emergency contraceptive is not available, be sure to ask your healthcare provider about how you can get Next Choice in advance, as an emergency precaution, should it become necessary.
