Establishing a dialogue
About 2 million unplanned pregnancies occur every year
in the United States and more than half of them lead to abortion.1
Many abortions, in fact, are a result of contraceptive failure.1
For unplanned pregnancies to be significantly reduced, greater availability and awareness of emergency contraceptive options are needed.2
All women can be at risk of contraceptive failure. However, according to the American
College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)10:
- More than one-third of women surveyed in 2004 still did not know there was something they could do to prevent an unplanned pregnancy
- Only 14% of women ages 18 to 44 ever discussed emergency contraceptives with their healthcare professional
In fact, only 25% of gynecologists include emergency contraception as part of their routine contraceptive counseling, even though 80% reported prescribing emergency contraception in the year 2001.11
