Please review these with your patients

Talk to your patients about Next Choice®. To help make counseling even easier, please review the following points with your patients:

  • Next Choice is available without a prescription for women 17 or older & for women 16 or younger, a prescription is required. Government issued identification is required for proof of age at the time of purchase
  • Next Choice, an FDA-approved emergency contraceptive, can prevent a pregnancy after unprotected sex, sexual attack, or contraceptive failure (for example, if a condom breaks or if you missed taking a birth control pill)
  • Two tablets are all that is needed. The first tablet should be taken as soon as possible within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex, sexual attack or contraceptive failure. The second tablet should be taken 12 hours after you take the first tablet is taken.
  • The sooner Next Choice is taken, the more effective it is.3 When used as directed, it can reduce a woman's chances of becoming pregnant by as much as 89%
  • Next Choice should not be used as regular birth control. It is not as effective as other birth control methods
  • Next Choice does not protect women from HIV infection (the virus that causes AIDS) or any other sexually transmitted diseases
  • Next Choice is not the same as RU-486 (the abortion pill). It works like a birth control pill to prevent an unplanned pregnancy
  • If Next Choice is taken as directed after a woman is already pregnant, it will not disrupt or affect her existing pregnancy.
  • Next Choice works like a regular birth control pill to prevent pregnancy. It acts by stopping the release of an egg from the ovary, and may also prevent fertilization (by the sperm). Next Choice may also prevent the egg from attaching to the uterus (womb). Next Choice will not affect a fertilized egg already attached to the uterus
  • It is possible that women may experience nausea when taking
    Next Choice. If she vomits within 1 hour of taking
    Next Choice, she should call her healthcare professional right away to see if the dose should be repeated
  • If a woman has severe abdominal pain after taking Next Choice, she may have an ectopic pregnancy and should seek immediate medical care

Important Safety Information

Next Choice® is not effective if you’re already pregnant, and it will not terminate an existing pregnancy. Next Choice does not protect against HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Side effects may include nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, changes in your period, dizziness, and breast tenderness. If your period is more than a week late, you may be pregnant. If you have severe abdominal pain, you may have an ectopic pregnancy, and you should get immediate medical help.
