Backup protection

Emergency contraception provides you with backup protection to help prevent a pregnancy after an unexpected event, such as:

  • when a birth control method fails (such as when a condom breaks or slips)
  • if you don't take your birth control pills as directed
  • you did not use any birth control method
  • when a sexual attack occurs

About 2 million unplanned pregnancies occur every year in the United States and more than half of them lead to abortion.3 To significantly reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies, many experts believe that better awareness of emergency contraceptives is needed.4

Even though it is a safe and effective backup plan, Next Choice® should never replace regular birth control. More effective options are available to regularly prevent pregnancy. Always consult your healthcare provider to discuss which option is best for you. And remember that emergency contraceptives will not prevent you from getting the HIV infection (the virus that causes AIDS) or other sexually transmitted diseases. Emergency contraception is a backup method of preventing pregnancy when used as directed. Next Choice is not effective in terminating an existing pregnancy, when taken as directed. It is not the same as the abortion pill (RU-486).

Important Safety Information

Next Choice® is not effective if you're already pregnant, and it will not terminate an existing pregnancy. Next Choice does not protect against HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Side effects may include nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, changes in your period, dizziness, and breast tenderness. If your period is more than a week late, you may be pregnant. If you have severe abdominal pain, you may have an ectopic pregnancy, and you should get immediate medical help.
